TRACTATUS SACERDOTALIS

EXHIBITION "CHRISTIANITY IN LITHUANIAN ART"
(28 December, 1999 - 31 December, 2003)

TRACTATUS SACERDOTALIS
(treatise for the priests, Lat.).
1503

Vilnius University Library

The most ancient manuscript containing the text of payers in Lithuanian was discovered in the Library of Vilnius University in 1962. Originally it belonged to the Franciscan monastery. It was there where Lithuanian emerged as the language of letters and survived in that form through the manuscript. This inscription makes the history of the Lithuanian written tradition at least half a century older. The straight, free and nice handwriting obviously belongs to an educated individual.
The text of the manuscript is decayed and fading. It was first read by Professor Jurgis Lebedys.
